Maxpedition keeps the options coming with this new big boy MPB variant, the XXL. As you may have guessed from the name, it is a fairly large pack, similar to what some may expect out of a patrol bag. The layout is similar to the orignal MPB with an overall upsize to allow larger items such as 17" laptops to fit.
The front changes things up a bit where it now has 2 good sized double zippered pockets that could be considered large GP in size and shape when it comes to tactical pouches. Internally both have plenty of sleeve pockets, but the one on the left has divided elastic good for pens etc, while the pocket on the right has 2 slot pockets with velcro straps for more options. The size of these pockets won't fit many items exactly, but are big enough to hold many different tactical or civilian items from 30 round rifle magazines to big power adapters. Generous amounts of loop velcro are on the exterior for patches. As a welcomed addition, a CCW pocket has been added behind these GP pockets. A 2" D-ring makes for a good tear open assist and the inside has 12" x 7" of loop fun space to allow easy placement of a handgun, pistol magazines, or other tactical accessories. For those not in the know, this pocket is easy to overlook, which is a good attribute when it comes to CCW. The Back side pocket is more like the classic MPB where it is one large admin area with clamshell style opening. On the exterior a single zipper pocket has been added and a horizontal bar/pad to allow stowage on handles of roller-type luggage. The bar can also work like a side grab strap, not so much for carrying, but good for an alternate grab point. Loop velcro is even on the bar, great sizing for a nametape or favorite patch. Inside, the large sleeve pocket is good for magazines(media) and documents with a SRB security strap option. Under that are 2 smaller sleeve pockets, then further down are 3 pockets with billow capability. The flexibility of the 3 new pockets is certainly appreciated as they work great for holding gadgetry. It would have been nice to go ahead and add some elastic or sleeve pockets to the inner flap, but no biggie. What I'll refer to as the left side keeps the 2 zipper pocket layout. They are simple with single zippers and the lower larger pocket has an internal sleeve pocket. With the size variance they help offer a closer possible fit to items you may want to hold. The right side of the MPB XXL has another GP style pocket with integrated ID area on the exterior. Double zippers are still used for the opening and inside is a sleeve pocket and mesh zippered pocket for further organization.
The bottom is actually quite plain, however this shouldn't be an issue as long as you don't use it as a drag bag. The top still uses the double zipper flap opening which works great for a quick wide opening. PALS webbing is even added to the hinge end just in case a small pouch addition is desired. Having the PALS only on this area rather than the whole top makes sense as the flap opening functionality would be cumbersome with pouches on the opening end. As a nice touch, tubing has been added to the zipper pull handle. Between the top and back sides are webbing loops with the intent to hold long full size flashlights or roll-up documents. Since I don't carry either very ofter I get frustrated with these straps since they get in the way of the zippers of the back pocket so I just can't wait to cut them off. As with most bags of this type, top carry handles are incorporated with a velcro strap to seal them together when desired. The shoulder strap is the usual from Maxpedition using plastic hardware, a tri-glide for length adjustment, and includes a velcro adjustable shoulder pad. Nothing new, yet a solid setup none the less. For additional changes all the hardware has been color matched which looks great and zippers are done reverse style for a more clean look.
Down into the interior of the whole bag, things are fairly simple, yet with some options. One side is a sleeve pocket while the other has a good patch of loop velcro so one can add CCW action or velcro accessory pockets. The ends also have loop areas, however they are for attachment points for the divider pad. A bottom pad is even modular so one can decide if they want the padding rigidity or to take it out to offer maximum holding space. With this modularity one can accommodate many items with a good fit ranging from laptops, piles of tac gear, to larger sized video cameras.
For those familiar with the Aggressor bag, the size of the XXL is similar with it being wider. Despite just being a large version of the MPB, the end result creates a in-between of the Patrol Bag and the Aggressor. The Patrol Bag being more about having 1 big compartment while the Aggressor has the pocket variety and is slimmer on the width. Due to the size, the MPB XXL isn't exactly a blast to run around in, however is fine at walking speeds. It would also be safe to say the bag ends up on the expensive side passing the $200 mark which may turn off some folks, but the price does make sense based on size, complexity, and quality. I think those who need to carry a combination of both tactical and larger electronics will enjoy this bag the most.
